417 | 1936 Olympic Games - Berlin, Germany Aileen Meagher and Canadian team, U.S. team, and British team prior to presentation with medals in Berlin. (Meagher is at the front of the group.) Hugh Townsend, Sports Editor, interviewed Aileen Meagher for his article "Memories of Berlin", The Chronicle-Herald, 21 June 1976. Aileen Meagher, Dorothy Brookshaw, Hila Cameron and Mildred Dolson were Canada's bronze medal winning relay team. Halifax sprinter Aileen Meagher nervously, but proudly, ascended the victory podium at the Berlin Olympics. The world looked on, Adolf Hitler was in the crowd, and the place was lined with black-shirt soldiers. Meagher recalled, "A lot of things were different 40 years ago. . . . I just went out and ran around the track as fast as I could go. I didn't have a diet, no special conditioning, I didn't know much about training. I just prepared myself to run as fast as I could." 447 | A Shocking Affair Perth Courier, December 10, 1875 Shocking Affair—Last Saturday a man named Henry Lever of Montague, brother to Daniel Lever of Bathurst, was brutally attacked by his uncle Nelson Weedmark and beaten senseless with the butt end of a gun after first being shot at by his assailant. In fact, we have heard just before going to press that Lever is dead leaving a wife and five children behind him. The brutal attack occurred opposite Weedmark’s house near Smith’s Falls. Both were considered “hard cases” and whiskey was to blame for engendering the hard feelings. Weedmark has given himself up. (Transcriber’s note, see article in next week’s paper, Mr. Lever apparently had NOT died.) Perth Courier, December 17, 1875 Committed: The attempted murder on Saturday last—Nelson Weedmark of Montague was conveyed to the Perth gaol to await the action of the General Sessions regarding his violent assault upon Henry Lever in that township a few days before. On Wednesday morning of this week the Sessions, not being competent to adjudicate on so serious a case as this presented, committed Weedmark to trial at the next Spring Assizes on the charge sustained by the finding of a True Bill by a grand jury, having assaulted the said Henry Lever with intent to kill. The offence constitutes what is called in law a “capital felony” and involves capital punishment. |

448 | A story of extraodinary heroism under fire WEEDMARK, JAMES A. Citation: The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to James A. Weedmark (RA19858329), Specialist Fifth Class, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam, while serving with Troop D, 3d Squadron, 5th Cavalry, 9th Infantry Division. Specialist Five Weedmark distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 19 June 1967 as a helicopter repairman with the 9th Infantry Division. Upon receiving an urgent request to help evacuate over one hundred casualties from a heated battle, Specialist Weedmark's aircraft proceeded to the site of the conflict and made a landing amid machine gun cross fire. Bullets immediately riddled the helicopter, wounding the aircraft commander as some of the casualties were placed aboard. Specialist Weedmark climbed atop the aircraft to assess the damage, and after he had determined that the aircraft was operative, the wounded were flown to a hospital. The helicopter returned for another load. As additional patients were being placed aboard, Specialist Weedmark was wounded in the thigh. Observing another rescue helicopter crash nearby, he ignored the painful injury, ran across fifty meters of open rice paddy laced with fierce enemy fire, and pulled the survivors from the wreckage. As he carried a wounded man to a protected position he was shot a second time. His own helicopter had been too badly damaged by the intense barrage to take off, and he proceeded to remove the casualties aboard to a place of safety. Specialist Weedmark continued to move between the two downed ships, disregarding his safety to secure radio equipment, weapons and ammunition. Using a machine gun, he then placed a furious volume of fire on the enemy. Wounded a third time, Specialist Weedmark finally fell unconscious from loss of blood and the tremendous strain of his exertions. Specialist Five Weedmark's extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army. Headquarters, US Army, Vietnam, General Orders No. 3251 (July 10, 1968) |
