Aileen holding a bouquet of flowers. Forty years later, Meagher told Hugh Townsend, Sports Editor, that despite the team's bronze medal, the team received little fanfare upon its return to Canada. Meagher recalled, ''There wasn't much of a welcoming. I was met at the station by my friends. The Herald and Mail gave me a bouquet of flowers . . . but that was about it. No fanfare.'' Townsend's story ''Memories of Berlin'' appeared in The Chronicle-Herald, 21 June 1976.[MG 1, vol. 2999, no. 1, between pp. 232-233]

 | 1936 Olympic Games - Berlin, Germany Aileen Meagher and Canadian team, U.S. team, and British team prior to presentation with medals in Berlin. (Meagher is at the front of the group.)
Hugh Townsend, Sports Editor, interviewed Aileen Meagher for his article "Memories of Berlin", The Chronicle-Herald, 21 June 1976. Aileen Meagher, Dorothy Brookshaw, Hila Cameron and Mildred Dolson were Canada's bronze medal winning relay team. Halifax sprinter Aileen Meagher nervously, but proudly, ascended the victory podium at the Berlin Olympics. The world looked on, Adolf Hitler was in the crowd, and the place was lined with black-shirt soldiers. Meagher recalled, "A lot of things were different 40 years ago. . . . I just went out and ran around the track as fast as I could go. I didn't have a diet, no special conditioning, I didn't know much about training. I just prepared myself to run as fast as I could." | Archibald Weedmark Home
 | This homestead photo was taken on October 31, 2010 with a Brownie No.2 Model A Folding Camera (similar to the camera photo at left) that was manufactured c. 1904 by Eastman Kodak of Rochester, New York.
The house pictured here belonged to Archibald Weedmark and his first wife Sarah Ruby Moore. After the early death of Ruby, Archie married Elizabeth (Lizzie) Scott. After Archie passed away in 1981, Lizzie moved from Carp back to Beachburg, where she lived in this house until her death in 2010. Lizzie would have been 95 years old on her birthday. | |
